Pass the butter baby!

It’s finally the weekend and you’ve got plans to kick back with friends up in Montauk, relaxing on the beach with an Aperol-Spritz in hand.

But wait – you were just invited to a clam bake. WTF is a clambake? What does that even mean? Well, fear not! Here’s everything you need to know.

A clam bake is a social gettogether, usually held on the beaches in the summer, in which seafood is baked in a traditional style. The food is typically cooked over layers of seaweed in a firepit, lined with stones, that is dug into the sand. These gatherings are always a festive, fun occasion and are often thrown along the New England coast.

Clam bakes have been a custom tradition in New England for thousands of years, originating with Native American practices of preparing seafood. So why not give it a shot this summer, attend a clambake or for those brave enough, throw your own? Your weekend in Montauk just got a lot better.

Some foods to bring (or forage, if you’re that good):

Clams (duh), lobster, shrimp, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, mussels, carrots, onions, butter (you get the drill)

And definitely don’t forget:

Utensils, plates, coal, fire safety knowledge(!), seaweed, shovel, and of course, to invite lots of friends
