Wild Luxe | Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort

A stylish beach resort on a secluded peninsula on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, the Andaz is an easy getaway — and the antidote to your usual beach vacation. Surrounded by untouched jungle and within easy reach of adrenaline-pumping activities like zip-lining, surfing, and whitewater rafting, it’s perfect if you’re craving sunshine with a dash of adventure.

What You’ll Be Doing: Lounging by one of two huge infinity pools, surrounded by a tropical  jungle listening to the soft crashing of the waves as birds of paradise sing in the background. Jet-skiing or kayaking on the pristine Culebra Bay. Watching the sun go down over the beach at Playa de Prieta. Taking a mixology class at Chao Pescao or creating your own fresh smoothie every morning at Rio Bhongo. Hiking under the shadow of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Getting a coffee-mocha scrub in your outdoor treatment room at the Onda Spa.

The Rooms: Minimalist chic but cozy, with concrete floors, blond wood furniture and local art made of driftwood and seashells. All rooms face the water, and a wall of windows, indoor/outdoor shower, and terrace will keep you focused on the view.

The Food: Simple but delicious, honoring local Costa Rican ingredients and recipes. Think an omelet with plantains, black beans, and rice for breakfast; coconut milk ceviche for lunch; and a tapas-style dinner with chicken arepas, beef skewers, and mixed seafood in a lemon-white wine sauce. There are three restaurants on the property and more options on the peninsula.

X Factor: Call it a lazy man’s safari; every afternoon, a family of white-faced capuchin monkeys swings and scampers around the adult pool area, making adorable, camera-ready faces.
