Worth Traveling For

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the few remaining grand dames on Lake Como that hasn’t softened its edges to chase trends. Open since 1873 and still family owned, it leans fully into its history — high ceilings, frescoed everything, and a level of formality that feels increasingly rare in the region. This is Bellagio at its most classic, positioned at the tip of the lake where the views stretch in multiple directions and never feel boring. For travelers who want heritage, scale, and a sense of place, it offers something more grounded — and arguably more memorable. Editor’s note: most tourists will stop to take photos of themselves in front of the property outside the gate, while you will be behind it with access to one of the most storied properties in Lake Como.

Rooms are traditionally styled with antique furnishings, silk fabrics, and marble bathrooms, many opening onto balconies with direct lake views. The setting does most of the work. The property’s gardens slope toward the water. There’s a private beach club and both indoor and outdoor pools that feel integrated into the landscape.

Dining is anchored by Mistral Restaurant, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, alongside more relaxed options that still maintain a certain level of polish. Service is formal but warm, with a noticeable emphasis on consistency and familiarity (they will remember your name as soon as you check in).

The spa covers both sides of the experience — a traditional thermal circuit with sauna, steam, and treatment rooms, alongside a full-service salon for hair and nails that makes it easy to stay polished without leaving the property. It’s practical in the best way: you can move from a proper treatment straight into a blowout and be ready for dinner.

Rooms & Experience

Staying here feels like stepping into a different time and tempo. Rooms are spacious, often with high painted ceilings (that date back to the 1800s)  and generous layouts that prioritize comfort over minimalism. Light pours in through large windows, especially in lake-facing categories, while interiors lean heavily into classic Italian design: patterned fabrics, chandeliers everywhere, and detailed woodwork. Privacy is strong, even during peak season, thanks to the size of the property, its layered layout, and its ethos to treat guests like family. It’s best suited for couples or travelers who appreciate tradition and don’t need a hyper-modern aesthetic to feel taken care of.

What to Know Before You Book

Book a lake-view suite — preferably with a balcony — as it will elevate the stay. The hotel operates at its best from late spring through early fall, when the surrounding town is also open, and when the gardens, beach club, and outdoor spaces are fully in use. Interiors are intentionally traditional. Bellagio can be busy during peak months, but the hotel’s position and size help buffer that. If you’re deciding between room categories, it’s worth stepping up for space and view — this is a property where both matter. Book a private boat day with the concierge as soon as you book your room, as they are subject to availability (and come at an additional cost).
