I was not fortunate enough to grow up an avid skier. But over my life, I’ve been lucky enough to become one. Growing up as a New York transplant in the “show me” plains of St. Louis, Missouri — aka “the gateway to the west” — I was equi-distant to the bounty of the American experience. It was from this vantage point — at the age of eight —  that I first ventured to Colorado and from that moment I was hooked. Over the next ten years, I only skied the Northeast and yes, while Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York all have a very specific brand of skiing and churn out some of the best competitive skiers on the planet, my affection and now expertise lies in skiing the Western US. And specifically, the chic ski resorts, defined by hundreds of micro factors at the local level from personality to topography: Aspen/Snowmass, Vail, Utah, and Montana. A look at my favorites this season.

ASPEN/SNOWMASS

Projected Opening Dates: Ajax and Snowmass, November 28, 2024;  Buttermilk and Highlands, December 14, 2024.

What’s Lux this Season

With what might be the most private members clubs per capita in a ski town worldwide, the more the merrier is the name of the game as AM7 private members lounge is slated to open above the world-famous music venue, Belly Up. What more? Yuki, the new Japanese dining concept comes from the legend, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa.

Where to Stay

Hotel Jerome: Aspen’s grand dame since 1889 was reimagined as an Auberge Resort back in 2011, but the evolution appears to never cease. The epitome of historic charm and forward-thinking luxury, it is almost impossible to not feel at home. For the last few months The Jerome has been elevating its fine-dining prowess with pop-ups from New York’s sushi haven, Taikun, a rotating guest-chef dining series (don’t miss three Michelin-starred chef, Norbert Niederkofler January 7-10, 2025), and the permanent restaurant, Prospect.

The Little Nell: The only five-star, five-diamond hotel in the area, “The Nell,” as it is known to locals, has the further distinction of having exclusive ski-in/ski-out access to Aspen Mountain (aka Ajax). From the two top-notch restaurants, Element47 (fine dining) and Ajax Tavern (those truffle fries…) and world-class wine program, to the “ski and be scene” living room, The Little Nell has presented the modern standard for luxury in the heart of Aspen for almost 40 years.

The Mollie: Aspen’s newest hotel, The Mollie blends modern sophistication with the charm of a boutique mountain retreat at a more accessible price point, which, this being Aspen, isn’t saying much. With sophisticated rooms, a friendly lobby full of locals, and easy access to both the town’s vibrant social scene and slopes, Mollie is a welcome addition to town. The all Rivian EV car fleet is a nice added touch.

VAIL

Projected Opening Date: November 15, 2024.

What’s Lux this Season

Vail is often a first mover when it comes to pushing the boundaries of convenience and technology. It was  one of the first to introduce a holistic app with location tracking back in 2010 and now in the 2024/25 season what would a world-class ski resort be without AI? The new MyEpic Assistant will allow skiers to inquire about everything from mountain conditions to rentals to dining options 24/7.  If AI is not your cup of tea, the new My Epic Gear program allows individuals and families to book slopeside valet service to rent gear from more than 50 of the top ski and snowboard models for the season.

The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail: The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail redefines mountain luxury, combining contemporary elegance with the timeless beauty of the Rockies. Experience personalized service, opulent accommodations, and one of the most picturesque outdoor pools in the Rockies. While the property itself is not ski-in/ski-out, Four Seasons runs a three-story ski valet mere steps from Gondola One. New this season, guests can expect one of the most exciting new restaurant openings in town as famed Denver-based restaurateur, Bobby Stucky of one Michelin-starred, Frasca debuts Tavernetta in the heart of the hotel.

Sonnenalp Vail: Nestled in the heart of Vail Village, the family-owned and operated Sonnenalp offers an unparalleled alpine escape with the perfect blend of old-world European charm and modern sophistication. Indulge in the serene full-service spa and exquisite dining experiences that celebrate the finest local and international flavors (our recommendation is the Swiss Chalet, (one of the hardest reservations in town to snag). Whether you’re skiing Vail’s legendary Back Bowls or unwinding at the bar or by the fire, Sonnenalp promises a refined, unforgettable retreat.

MONTANA

What’s Lux this Season:

There is just so much happening in the “Treasure State” right now it’s almost impossible to hone in on one resort. But these proverbial classics continue to stand out.

Where to Stay

The Ranch at Rock Creek:  From the moment you set foot on this Relais & Chateau guest ranch you are indelibly transformed by your surroundings. With no shortage of things to do, your “Ranch Ambassador” becomes your guide and friend helping coordinate one of a thousand permutations of customized experiences. My favorite had to be what can best be described as a private five-star “tailgate” in the parking lot of Discovery Ski Area complete with chef, grill, bartender, and table service. Just unreal.

Projected Opening Date: early December, 2024, local ski area, Discovery.

The Green O, Greenough: This adults-only retreat in Montana’s pristine wilderness offers a truly intimate, ultra-luxurious escape where modern design meets rugged natural beauty. With 12 private Haus accommodations — each unique with amenities ranging from floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor hot tubs — 21+ guests are immersed in tranquility while enjoying world-class cuisine and personalized outdoor adventures. A sanctuary of seclusion, this property redefines luxury with a deep connection to nature usually found in the Alps.

Projected Opening Date: November 27, 2024. Local ski area, Snowbowl.

Montage Big Sky: Set in the shadows of the Spanish Peaks, this  most recent addition to the Montage portfolio raises the bar for what a modern alpine hotel in the US can be. Monumental in stature with almost every amenity you can imagine (plus ski-in/ski-out access), guests will be hard pressed to want for anything.

Projected Opening Date: Local ski area, Big Sky. Projected ski area opening date: November 27, 2024.

Where to Stay

Stein Eriksen Lodge: Exuding alpine elegance since 1982, Stein Eriksen Lifge offers a five-star mountain retreat where American classic alpine luxury meets legendary Champagne powder. With lavish accommodations, award-winning spa, and gourmet dining, this iconic lodge invites one to experience ski-in/ski-out access and bespoke service.

Family owned and now under the Auberge brand, this boutique hotel offers elegantly appointed accommodations, exquisite dining (don’t miss the authentic Austrian fair at The Goldener Hirsch Restaurant), and personalized service. From the ski-in/ski-out access and social media-worthy rooftop pool, The GH is a winner.
