Worth Traveling For
At its core, Thompson Houston is a resort hotel — one that happens to be in the middle of a major American city. It earns that reputation thanks to its vibey pool experience, tranquil spa, and quality dining. The real draw is the energy. The seventh-floor lobby doubles as a living room of sorts, anchored by an intimate library lounge, buzzy bar, and an outdoor deck that spills toward the pool. By afternoon, it shifts into a see-and-be-seen scene, especially on weekends when the infinity pool fills with a well-heeled crowd sipping Champagne in cabanas.
The hotel opened on February 14 (2024), a fitting debut for a property that’s unapologetically seductive. It’s a striking 36-story glass tower in the city’s historic Fourth Ward, with Buffalo Bayou Park as its front yard and the downtown Houston skyline as its backdrop.

Hotel Highlights
The rooftop infinity pool is the hotel’s social heartbeat. Designed to appear as though it tips directly into the Houston skyline, it draws a stylish crowd. There are plenty of places to lounge and spread out, from cabanas to grassy lawns. Enjoy lunch at Sol 7, where you can sit on the deck and observe the pool crowd while enjoying hearty southern comforts like chicken and waffles (with housemade hot sauce) and honey chipotle shrimp and grits.
For more formal dining, head to Chardon. The street-level French brasserie has quickly earned its place among Houston’s most exciting dining rooms. It’s especially dreamy during golden hour, featuring robin’s egg blue banquettes, walnut arches, gilt-framed Impressionist paintings, and antique mirrors. For apps, order sweet and savory dishes like macarons filled with foie gras mousse and cherry topped with cacao, or cornbread madeleines with trout roe, crème fraîche, and dill. You won’t regret the smash burger with duck fat fries, or opt for a lighter option such as the local catch plated tableside in a buttermilk sauce.
Another noteworthy feature is the hotel’s custom fragrance, Luna Noir (developed with Soular Therapy). Enjoy a sensorial blend of leather and jasmine (masculine on the front notes, feminine softness on the back end). You’ll subtly notice it everywhere, from the elevator to your pool chaise.

Rooms and Experience
The suites are standout, including a separate living room and gorgeous marble soaking tubs next to floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms are moody and sexy — think textured finishes, saturated tones, and striking modern art — without sacrificing comfort. There are also thoughtful details such as Dyson hairdryers, Sferra linens, and refillable bottles (with both still and sparkling water offered on each floor).
The spa occupies an entire floor. Six treatment suites, a dry sauna, relaxation areas, and a salon combine to create a relaxing retreat among all the buzz. Massages are supremely relaxing (book Gigi if you can). The couples’ suite is a proper, spacious room; re: you genuinely won’t hear what’s happening on the other table. Try the CBD massage, which is truly rejuvenating, as the treatment includes gummies, a wellness shot, and oil all featuring cannabidiol. Pro tip from our therapist: spend time in the dry sauna post-treatment to seal in the CBD’s muscle recovery benefits.
If you can get in, book a salon treatment. Local hair legend Michael Saldana has a residency, bringing in his talented team to offer cuts, shaves, and his signature Texas blowout: voluminous, curled, full of body.

What to Know Before Booking
You’ll want to book a suite, and the most coveted one to book is the panoramic corner suite with wraparound windows framing the Buffalo Bayou and the Houston skyline (and, if you time it right, Fourth of July fireworks). When you want to take a break from lounging in your room, there are two spaces to work out: the well-equipped, well-lit hotel gym or EOS Fitness, an expansive center directly across the street. Hotel guests receive access to EOS, known for its high-energy workout scene.
