Worth Traveling For
For many, Cabo conjures debauchery and touristy overload, but the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa proves this tip of the Baja peninsula is equally primed for tranquil elegance. Located near the vibrant, art-centric town of San José del Cabo, far removed from bustling Cabo San Lucas, this expansive resort fronting the Sea of Cortez honors the surrounding natural beauty. Contemporary architecture of crisp lines and stone-and-concrete boldness accentuates sea views; while beautifully landscaped grounds, with five stair-stepped pools, offer numerous open-air gathering and event spots.
Spacious and sophisticated, the resort is ideal for couples on a romantic getaway or seeking R&R (via the spa, adults-only pool with swim-up bar). And while Cabo is only a short drive away, with JW Marriott’s six terrific restaurants and bars on site, chances are you’ll never want to leave.
Hotel Highlights
The deluxe guest rooms are clean and comfortable, with Mexican-tile floors, a couch seating area, and private balcony with lovely ocean and property views. But the common areas are where the resort truly shines, and with so many garden nooks, poolside and oceanfront perches, plus open-air reception and bar areas, these are the draw. Service is warm and personable; the staff goes above and beyond in making guests feel welcome and fabulously cared for. At breakfast (a la carte or a decadent buffet) servers knew my coffee order and water preference without having to ask.
The Jasha Spa is a highlight, with its infinity-edged lap pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and cold plunge, and a full treatment menu, plus an authentic Temazcal sweat lodge. And the hotel’s culinary program, starring Chef Thierry Blouet’s award-winning Café des Artistes, has put Baja California and Los Cabos on the global culinary map.
Rooms & Experience
There’s so much to do and experience (including chilling poolside and doing nothing at all) that the guest rooms can get by with feeling relatively standard. Bathrooms feature waterfall showers and a soaking tub, with locally sourced chamomile bath salts. Linens, robes, and bath products all meet expectations for a luxury stay, and heavy blackout curtains helped with my east coast jet lag. Unique touches like local artisan-made beach bags for pool schlepping are thoughtful (and available for purchase), and the meticulously landscaped gardens and property amenities are exceptional.
What to Know Before You Book
While the climate year round in Baja California is ideal, peak whale-watching season is January through March (although we saw stragglers in April), when you can have a front-row seat for humpback ballet right from your room. Winter, however, is also the busier tourist season. Keep in mind that due to rough surf and riptides year round, swimming is not allowed on Los Cabos beaches.
Families traveling together may want to opt for the luxury Umey suites for a little more elbow room, and be sure to book reservations at Café des Artistes in advance, as it’s popular for locals and visitors across the peninsula.
